How to hire staff in Sierra Leone
A practical guide for guest houses, shops, NGOs, contractors and growing businesses.
Step by step
- Define the role. Title, main tasks, hours, location, pay range, start date, and the three skills you cannot train.
- Advertise widely. Your own business, our board, social media, local networks and the available talent list.
- Shortlist against the advert. Score each CV against your three must-haves before you meet anyone.
- Interview fairly. Same questions for everyone, one practical task if relevant (for example a short cash count or typing test), notes taken for each candidate.
- Check references. Phone two previous supervisors. Ask whether they would rehire the person.
- Offer in writing. Role, pay, hours, probation period, leave and notice. Both sides sign.
- Onboard properly. Day one: ID checks, safety briefing, who to ask for help. Review at one month and at the end of probation.
Good questions to ask
- “Tell me about a time you solved a problem without being told how.”
- “What would your last manager say is your biggest strength?”
- “How would you handle an angry customer or guest?”
- “When could you start, and what notice do you have to give?”
Payroll and legal basics
Employers usually have payroll obligations such as income-tax deductions and social security contributions through NASSIT. Rates and rules change, so confirm the current position with the National Revenue Authority, NASSIT or an accountant, and have a lawyer review your contract template.

Questions
How do I hire staff in Sierra Leone?
Write a clear job description, advertise it in several places, shortlist against it, interview with the same questions for every candidate, check references, then give a written offer and contract. Our free job board and candidate pool can speed up the shortlist.
Do I have to give a written contract?
Put the terms in writing: role, pay, hours, probation, leave and notice. Ask a lawyer to review your template for current legal requirements, because employment rules change.
What payroll obligations do employers have?
Employers typically need to register with the relevant authorities and make payroll deductions and contributions, such as income tax on employees and social security contributions through NASSIT. Check current obligations and rates with the National Revenue Authority and NASSIT, or with an accountant.
How much does it cost to post a job here?
Posting is free while we build the candidate pool. We review every posting before it goes live, usually within one working day.
