Job interview tips for Sierra Leone
Arrive early, know the employer, answer with examples, and ask good questions. Here is how.
Before the day
- Learn what the employer does, its products or programmes, and who the manager is.
- Re-read the advert and note three skills they asked for. Prepare an example for each.
- Plan your route and the time. Allow for traffic, rain and the ferry if you cross the water.
- Bring copies of your CV, original certificates and ID, a pen and notebook.
Six questions you will almost certainly be asked
| Question | How to answer |
|---|---|
| “Tell us about yourself.” | Two minutes: your current role, two strengths, why this job. Do not start with your childhood. |
| “Why do you want this job?” | Link your skills to the employer’s needs. Show you researched them. |
| “What is your biggest strength?” | Name one strength and prove it with a short example and result. |
| “What is your weakness?” | Choose a real, small weakness and say what you are doing about it. |
| “Tell us about a problem you solved.” | Situation, what you did, the result. Keep it specific. |
| “Where do you see yourself in five years?” | Show commitment and growth in this field, without sounding like you will leave. |
On the day
- Arrive 15 minutes early, switch your phone to silent and greet everyone politely.
- Shake hands, make eye contact and wait to be invited to sit.
- Listen to the whole question before you answer. It is fine to pause and think.
- Be honest. Employers often check references.
- Ask two questions at the end, for example about the first three months and how success is measured.
After the interview
Send a short message the same day thanking the interviewer. If you hear nothing after the date they gave you, follow up once, politely.

Questions
What should I wear to an interview in Freetown?
Dress smart and neat for the role: a shirt and trousers or a professional dress or skirt, closed shoes, clean and pressed. When unsure, dress one level above the job.
What should I bring?
Several copies of your CV, original certificates and ID, a pen and notebook, and the names and phone numbers of your referees.
How do I handle a question about salary?
Research a reasonable range for the role first. Say what you are looking for, show you are flexible, and ask what the employer has budgeted. Avoid naming a figure before you understand the job.
What if I am late because of transport?
Leave early and plan for traffic and the weather. If you are delayed, phone ahead and apologise briefly. Arriving 15 minutes early is the safest plan.
